What is CLER?

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) recognizes the public’s need for a physician workforce capable of meeting the challenges of a rapidly evolving health care environment.

The ACGME has responded to this need by implementing the CLER program as a part of its Next Accreditation System. The CLER program is designed to provide US teaching hospitals, medical centers, health systems, and other clinical settings affiliated with ACGME-accredited institutions with periodic feedback that addresses the following six focus areas: patient safety; health care quality; care transitions; supervision; fatigue management and mitigation; and professionalism.

The feedback provided by the CLER program is designed to improve how clinical sites engage resident and fellow physicians in learning to provide safe, high quality patient care.
The only accreditation requirement associated with this new program is that each SI must undergo a CLER visit every 24 to 36 months to maintain accreditation.

Coaching Program

Coaching services were established by GME to address all issues of CLER and Section VI of the ACGME Common Program Requirements, with particular attention to sections VI.B Professionalism and VI.C Well-Being. Residents or Fellows who are struggling to achieve acceptable scores and evaluations, who are having issues with professionalism, or who might be struggling in the learning environment overall can use this stigma-free coaching resource as an alternative to mental health care to address time-management, work-life balance, leadership development, study skills, test anxiety, understanding working with teams, personality and career fit or any non-mental health issue that could be impeding their progress.
